The Nigerian government has lauded Ethiopian Airlines for its commitment to the nation, celebrating the launch of a second daily flight to Lagos and emphasizing its role in Nigeria’s vision to become a leading aviation hub in Africa. The Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development officially recognized the expanded service, highlighting the airline’s long-standing partnership and crucial support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“For us in the Ministry, Ethiopian Airlines is not a foreign airline—it is our airline,” declared Permanent Secretary Dr. Ibrahim Kana at a formal event. “Ethiopia and Nigeria share enduring ties. We see Ethiopia as part of Nigeria, just as we consider Nigeria a part of Ethiopia. Dr. Kana acknowledged Ethiopian Airlines’ steadfast service throughout the pandemic, when it maintained essential air connectivity and delivered vital supplies to Nigeria. With 14 weekly flights now connecting Lagos and Addis Ababa, the government is actively encouraging further expansion, emphasizing Lagos’ strategic importance to the national economy and the ambition to transform the city into a continental aviation hub rivalling Addis Ababa.
The Permanent Secretary extended an open invitation to other international airlines to capitalize on Nigeria’s modernizing aviation infrastructure, including upgraded airports in major cities like Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Kano. The government reiterated its commitment to bolstering connectivity, fostering regional trade, and driving African integration through enhanced air travel.
The increased flight frequency is seen as a significant step towards strengthening bilateral ties, unlocking economic opportunities, and solidifying Nigeria’s position as a leader in air transport and commerce across the continent. The arrival of Ethiopian Airlines’ second daily flight symbolizes the deepening partnership and a shared vision for a more interconnected and prosperous Africa.
