In a landmark development for regional air connectivity in Southwest Nigeria, the Gateway International Airport in Ogun State has officially commenced scheduled commercial flights. The maiden service, operated by ValueJet Airlines, took off for Abuja on October 7, 2025 — marking the beginning of a new era in the state’s transportation and economic growth.
A Historic Takeoff
The launch ceremony was presided over by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, alongside top aviation officials, community leaders, and residents who gathered to witness the first official flight. The inaugural aircraft, a Bombardier CRJ jet, departed with a full load of passengers bound for the nation’s capital.
Governor Abiodun described the event as “a validation” of his administration’s promise to connect Ogun by road, rail, air, and water. He acknowledged the vision of previous administrations for selecting the airport’s strategic location, adding that the facility would drive trade, tourism, and investment across the state.
Also speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, commended Ogun State for achieving a world-class aviation project within a short period. He noted that the Gateway Airport, which began construction in 2021, had reached operational status in record time — one of the fastest airport developments in Nigeria.
Modern Facilities and Capabilities
Gateway International Airport is built to meet international standards, with facilities designed for both passenger and cargo operations. The airport boasts a cargo terminal, customs and immigration offices, a fully equipped air traffic control tower, and an Instrument Landing System (ILS) that ensures safe and efficient flight operations in all weather conditions.
The airport also features a modern terminal building with comfortable lounges, digital check-in systems, and safety equipment that comply with global aviation standards. Its expansive runway is capable of handling medium-to-large commercial aircraft, positioning Ogun as a new hub for regional and domestic air travel.
According to officials, the facility’s cargo operations will open new trade routes for manufacturers, farmers, and exporters across the state. With Ogun’s growing industrial base and proximity to Lagos, the airport is expected to serve as a logistics bridge between Southwest Nigeria and other parts of the country.
Economic and Social Impact
The commencement of scheduled commercial flights is projected to boost Ogun State’s economy in several ways:
Job Creation: The airport will generate employment opportunities for aviation professionals, security personnel, ground staff, and local entrepreneurs.
Tourism Growth: Easier access by air will attract investors, cultural enthusiasts, and leisure travelers to the state’s tourist attractions.
Trade Expansion: The airport’s cargo capacity will support industrial clusters, export businesses, and agricultural value chains.
Decongesting Lagos: With the proximity to Lagos, Gateway Airport offers travelers an alternative route, potentially easing traffic at Murtala Muhammed Airport.
Residents of Ogun have expressed excitement over the launch, praising the Abiodun administration for fulfilling one of its key infrastructure promises. Youth groups, business owners, and community leaders described the project as a “gateway to prosperity” for the state.
Challenges and Future Outlook
Despite the success of the inaugural flight, several challenges remain. Maintaining consistent flight operations, ensuring safety compliance, and sustaining passenger demand will be key factors in the airport’s long-term success.
Competition from nearby airports in Lagos and Ibadan may also pose challenges, but Ogun’s unique industrial and agricultural advantages could help it carve out a sustainable niche. Continuous collaboration between state authorities, the NCAA, and private airlines will be essential to ensure operational efficiency and attract more routes.
Governor Abiodun emphasized that the state will continue working with the Federal Ministry of Aviation and other partners to strengthen regulation, improve logistics, and integrate the airport with other transport systems such as rail and road networks.
A New Chapter for Nigerian Aviation
The launch of the Gateway International Airport places Ogun among the growing number of states investing in aviation infrastructure to boost regional growth. It reflects a broader national effort to decentralize air travel, enhance economic competitiveness, and promote balanced development across Nigeria.
By providing a modern gateway for passengers and cargo, Ogun is positioning itself as a key player in the aviation and logistics sector. The Gateway Airport is not just a new terminal — it is a bold statement of ambition, signaling that the state is ready to compete on both domestic and global stages.
As the first commercial flights take to the skies, the people of Ogun and beyond are witnessing the realization of a long-held dream — one that promises to connect communities, drive development, and redefine the state’s economic future.
