Adesina to Liberia: ‘Arise and Shine’ With Vision, Accountability, and National Unity

The President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has delivered a compelling message of hope, reform, and renewed leadership to Liberia’s government. Speaking on Tuesday in Monrovia, in the presence of President Joseph Boakai and top government officials, Adesina delivered a keynote address titled “Liberia, Arise and Shine.”

With a blend of optimism and urgency, the AfDB President outlined seven key lessons that he believes are vital for Liberia’s transformation and long-term success.

The Seven Pillars of Progress

Dr. Adesina’s speech focused on critical leadership and governance principles that have driven national development in other countries and could do the same for Liberia. His message centered on action, collaboration, and measurable outcomes:

Vision is the compass that leads to success:
He emphasized that national progress starts with a bold, shared vision that guides both policy and purpose.

  1. Measurable results matter:
Adesina urged the Liberian leadership to focus on outcomes, not just intentions. He stated that development should be tracked and evaluated by tangible improvements in people’s lives.
  2. Ministerial accountability:
Calling for integrity and performance, he stressed the need for ministers to be held accountable for their portfolios, saying public office is a service, not a privilege.
  3. Teamwork:
Adesina highlighted the importance of unity within government, reminding leaders that no single individual can transform a nation alone
  4. One Government approach:
“Fragmentation weakens development,” he warned. The AfDB boss encouraged Liberia’s institutions to work collaboratively across ministries and sectors.
  5. Don’t just blow the whistle – show the yellow or red card:
Using a metaphor from football, he urged President Boakai and his team to enforce consequences for poor performance, corruption, and negligence.
  6.  Reform and support the civil service and judiciary:
Adesina concluded by stressing that a functioning civil service and impartial judiciary are essential pillars of the rule of law and national stability.

Support for Liberia’s Development Journey

The African Development Bank remains a committed partner in Liberia’s development agenda. Under Adesina’s leadership, the Bank has consistently championed reforms, infrastructure expansion, and investment in human capital across Africa. His address in Monrovia is seen as both a call to action and a sign of continued support.

President Joseph Boakai, who assumed office earlier this year, has expressed a strong desire to rebuild Liberia’s economy, strengthen institutions, and fight corruption. Adesina’s remarks echoed and reinforced this agenda.

A Message Beyond Politics

Observers described Adesina’s speech as timely and grounded, offering clear direction rather than abstract ideas. The call to “Arise and Shine” struck a chord with many Liberians, both in government and among the public.

“This wasn’t just another political speech—it was a development roadmap,” said a senior official at the Ministry of Finance. “Dr. Adesina reminded us that change is possible, but it takes discipline, unity, and vision.”

As Liberia looks ahead, the message from Dr. Akinwumi Adesina is clear: the time for bold vision, leadership, and reform is now. With the right mindset and accountability framework, Liberia can indeed rise — and shine.
