AU Commission Chair Celebrates African Union Day, Emphasizes Unity, Prosperity, and Pan-African Vision

In a keynote address commemorating African Union Day on 9 September 2025, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, underscored Africa’s collective progress and renewed commitment to a united, prosperous, and peaceful continent. Speaking to dignitaries, officials, and citizens, Youssouf highlighted the enduring symbolism of September 9—the anniversary of the Sirte Declaration in 1999—which marked the launch of the African Union as a framework for stronger continental unity, cooperation, and integration.

“The Sirte Declaration laid the foundation for a united Africa,” the Chairperson proclaimed. “Today, we honor our shared journey, celebrate the resilience of our peoples, and reaffirm the spirit of Pan-Africanism that continues to bind us together.”

The speech laid out a drumbeat of notable achievements across the continent, including progress in peace and security, conflict resolution, and economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Youssouf noted Africa’s accelerating strides in renewable energy, digital innovation, and youth empowerment, all contributing to the continent’s rising profile on the global stage. As Africa advances, the Chair emphasized adherence to the AU’s core principles: solidarity, integration, and sustainable development. He stressed the need to tackle ongoing challenges in peace and security, economic transformation, and social progress while capitalizing on the immense opportunities envisioned under Agenda 2063.

“We must work hand in hand—governments, the private sector, civil society, youth, and our partners—to build a continent where every African can thrive with dignity and hope,” Youssouf said.

The message closed with a call to continued unity and collective effort to advance the AU’s strategic goals, inviting renewed collaboration across all sectors of society to realize a more prosperous, peaceful Africa for generations to come.

Happy African Union Day to all.”
