“From Trees to Tech: Enugu Emerges Nigeria’s Model Green State”

Enugu State has emerged as the winner of the prestigious N100 million Model Green State Award, in recognition of its outstanding efforts in environmental sustainability and green development. The award was presented at the 2025 National Environmental Sustainability Summit held in Abuja on Thursday.

The accolade positions Enugu as a leading example in Nigeria for effective environmental management and urban sustainability. It celebrates the state’s innovative strategies for promoting clean energy, waste management, and urban greening projects.

Minister of Environment Praises Enugu
During the award presentation, the Minister of Environment, Dr. Grace Alele, lauded the state’s achievements. “Enugu State has demonstrated exemplary commitment to environmental sustainability. From the implementation of effective waste management systems to the promotion of renewable energy initiatives, the state has shown that development and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand,” she said.

About the Model Green State Award
The Model Green State Award, which carries a cash prize of N100 million, is designed to incentivize states that implement practical solutions to environmental challenges. It forms part of the federal government’s broader strategy to reduce carbon footprints and foster greener cities nationwide.

Governor Nwankwo Receives Award
Governor Chijioke Nwankwo of Enugu received the award on behalf of the state, expressing pride and gratitude. “This award is a testament to the hard work of our teams and the collective efforts of Enugu residents who have embraced green living. Our administration has always prioritized sustainable development, and this recognition motivates us to do even more,” Governor Nwankwo said.

Enugu’s Green Initiatives
Under Governor Nwankwo’s leadership, Enugu has launched numerous green projects. These include large-scale tree planting campaigns, urban greening initiatives, and the promotion of clean energy in public institutions.

Modern waste management programs, including waste-to-energy plants and recycling systems, have significantly reduced environmental pollution in the state’s urban centers.

Green Schools Initiative
One of the state’s standout programs is the “Green Schools Initiative.” Environmental education has been integrated into primary and secondary school curricula, with students participating in tree planting, waste segregation, and awareness campaigns. This fosters environmental consciousness from a young age.

Other States Recognized
While Enugu took the top prize, other states, including Lagos, Rivers, and Oyo, were also recognized for their sustainability efforts. Experts at the summit highlighted Enugu’s comprehensive and innovative approach as a model for others to emulate.

Community Engagement Key to Success
Environmental consultants praised Enugu’s multi-stakeholder approach, which involves citizens, private enterprises, and civil society organizations. “Enugu State has managed to involve all sectors in its environmental programs. This ensures green initiatives are sustainable and impactful,” said Dr. Emeka Okafor, a sustainability consultant.

Award Brings Additional Support
In addition to the N100 million prize, Enugu will receive technical support from the federal Ministry of Environment to scale up its projects and share best practices with other states. Officials emphasized that the award is intended as a model for nationwide replication.

Public Reaction and Future Plans
The award announcement sparked excitement among residents, who took to social media to celebrate the state’s achievements. Governor Nwankwo pledged to expand the state’s environmental programs further. “Winning this award is not the end of our journey. We see it as a starting point to achieve even greater sustainability milestones. Our vision is to make Enugu a model green city, not just for Nigeria, but for Africa,” he said.

A Blueprint for Nigeria
The Model Green State Award underscores the importance of environmental sustainability in Nigeria’s development agenda. Enugu’s success demonstrates how states can integrate green initiatives with economic growth and urban planning.

With the cash prize and ongoing support from the federal government, Enugu is well-positioned to continue leading Nigeria in environmental stewardship, inspiring other states to adopt innovative strategies for a greener, cleaner future.
