Lagos State will host Africa’s first-ever electric powerboat race, the E1 Championship, this October — a landmark move that puts Nigeria at the forefront of sustainable marine innovation on the continent.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement after attending the E1 Championship in Monaco, accompanied by key government officials. The prestigious clean-energy racing event is scheduled for October 4–5, 2025, in the waters of Lagos — earning the city the distinction of being Africa’s first E1 host.
“This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special — our culture, our energy, and our people,” said Governor Sanwo-Olu in a statement posted on his official Facebook page.
About the E1 Championship
The E1 World Championship is the world’s first all-electric powerboat series, designed to promote clean energy in marine transportation. The Lagos edition marks a major step in the event’s expansion into Africa and aligns with global climate goals.
The governor noted that the idea to bring E1 to Lagos stemmed from a bold vision to merge innovation, sustainability, and Lagos’s rich aquatic potential. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that this event will not only spotlight Lagos internationally but also stimulate eco-tourism, marine innovation, and economic development.
Global Partnerships and Support
Sanwo-Olu expressed deep appreciation to Afreximbank, who are co-investors in the event and backers of Team Drogba, one of the participating teams. He praised their faith in Lagos’s ambition to lead in green marine transport solutions.
Also present in Monaco was Mr. Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, who underscored the governor’s visionary leadership:
“Governor Sanwo-Olu leads the way as Lagos activates water-motorsports in Nigeria’s State of Aquatic Splendour,” Fatodu said.
