AU Chairperson Hails UN General Assembly Resolution on Strengthened UN–AU Cooperation

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has welcomed the unanimous adoption of a United Nations (UN) General Assembly resolution aimed at deepening cooperation between the UN and the AU. The resolution was passed during the Seventy-ninth Session of the General Assembly held on 29 August 2025 in New York.

In a statement issued shortly after the adoption, Chairperson Youssouf described the development as a “strong endorsement” of Africa’s leadership role and of the longstanding partnership between the two global institutions.

“A Vital Step for Africa and the World”

“The resolution is a strong endorsement of Africa’s leadership and of the vital partnership between the UN and AU in advancing peace, security, and sustainable development,” Youssouf declared. He added that the decision is not just symbolic, but a commitment that must translate into concrete actions benefitting Africans and contributing to global stability.

According to him, the AU and UN share common priorities, especially in addressing challenges such as peacekeeping, climate change, poverty eradication, and inclusive growth. “Together, we will translate this commitment into concrete action that delivers for Africa’s people and contributes to global stability,” the AU Chairperson affirmed.

Commitment to Global and Regional Agendas

Reaffirming the AU’s dedication, Youssouf stressed that the Union will continue to work hand-in-hand with the UN to achieve Africa’s Agenda 2063 and the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Both frameworks are designed to promote prosperity, unity, and resilience, with Africa’s Agenda 2063 serving as a blueprint for the continent’s transformation, while the 2030 Agenda serves as a global action plan.

“The AU remains unwavering in its commitment to Africa’s Agenda 2063 and to the 2030 Agenda. These are not competing visions, but complementary pathways to ensure that Africa achieves sustainable growth while contributing to a stronger, fairer world,” he noted.

Strategic Cooperation

The resolution, observers say, provides an institutional framework for enhancing cooperation in critical areas such as conflict prevention, mediation, peacekeeping operations, and sustainable economic development. It also reinforces the principle of African solutions to African problems, while recognizing the indispensable role of global solidarity.

Diplomatic sources at the UN highlighted that the resolution was passed without opposition, signaling broad international consensus on the importance of aligning efforts with Africa’s priorities.
