The Chairman of the African Union Commission,H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has extended warm greetings to the people and government of Ethiopia as they ushered in the new year, known locally as Enkutatash, wishing them peace, prosperity, and continued national progress.
Ethiopia’s New Year and Its Significance
Unlike the Gregorian calendar, Ethiopia follows its own ancient calendar, with the New Year falling on September 11. The occasion, celebrated at the end of the rainy season, is marked by the blooming of yellow Meskel daisies, which cover the highlands and symbolize renewal and hope.
Families come together for traditional meals, children sing songs from house to house, and people exchange gifts and blessings. It is a time not only of festivity but also of reflection and prayer for peace and prosperity.
AU’s Solidarity with Ethiopia
In his message, AU Commission Chairman Youssouf said the African Union joins Ethiopians in their New Year celebrations. “On behalf of the African Union Commission, I would like to wish the Ethiopian people and government a happy and prosperous new year,” Youssouf stated.

He added: “We extend our best wishes for the new year to be peaceful and prosperous for Ethiopia and its people.”
Ethiopia’s Role in African Unity
Yusuf praised Ethiopia’s longstanding leadership in African affairs, recalling its role in hosting the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa and its historic contributions to the struggle for independence and Pan-African solidarity.
“Ethiopia has played an instrumental role in the struggle for African unity and change, and we call on the nation to continue this remarkable contribution,” he emphasized.
A Call for Peace and Renewal
The AU Chairman encouraged Ethiopians to see Enkutatash not only as a cultural festival but also as an opportunity for renewal and unity. His remarks highlighted Ethiopia’s position as a pillar of stability and diplomacy in Africa.
By tying the holiday’s theme of new beginnings to broader continental aspirations, Youssouf reminded Africans that Ethiopia’s peace and development remain essential for Africa’s collective progress.
Goodwill for the People
Beyond politics, Youssouf’s message reflected admiration for the resilience of the Ethiopian people. He described the New Year as a moment of joy rooted in deep traditions that symbolize hope, optimism, and continuity.
He also noted that the AU values Ethiopia’s cultural contributions just as much as its diplomatic ones, stressing that the nation remains central to shaping Africa’s shared destiny.
A Shared Vision for the Future
As Ethiopia marked Enkutatash on September 11, 2025, also known as meskerem 1, 2018 the AU’s message stands as a testament to the country’s significance on the continental stage. With its mix of cultural beauty and political importance, Ethiopia continues to inspire Africa’s dream of unity and transformation.
