Gov Umo Eno Expands Akwa Ibom Tourism Vision with Shopping City Initiative

Governor Umo Eno has announced the addition of a modern Shopping City to Akwa Ibom State’s growing list of tourism infrastructure projects, as part of his administration’s comprehensive strategy to transform the state into a premier tourism and investment destination.

Speaking during an inspection tour of ongoing projects in Uyo, Governor Eno emphasized that the Shopping City is a vital part of his vision to develop a robust tourism ecosystem that drives economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development across the state.

“This Shopping City will not only serve as a commercial hub but also as a leisure and lifestyle centre that attracts both local and international visitors,” Governor Eno stated. “All our infrastructural investments, especially in Uyo City, are strategically aligned with our commitment to reposition Akwa Ibom as a go-to destination for tourism, trade, and hospitality.”

The Shopping City, according to state officials, will feature world-class retail outlets, restaurants, entertainment spaces, and recreational facilities, integrated with urban green spaces and accessible infrastructure. It is expected to complement other key tourism assets being developed by the administration, such as the International Worship Centre, Ibom Tropicana upgrade, Ibom Air expansion, and the Uyo-Oron beach corridor development.

Governor Eno’s administration has made tourism one of the pillars of its ARISE Agenda, prioritizing infrastructure that enhances accessibility, aesthetics, and hospitality offerings in the state.

He reiterated that the objective is not only to attract tourists but also to stimulate the local economy through private sector participation, small business growth, and increased revenue from tourism-driven activities.

“Tourism is a major driver of inclusive economic growth. When we invest in tourism, we create opportunities for artisans, transporters, vendors, hotel operators, event planners, and more. It is a strategic way of empowering our people,” Eno said.

Residents and stakeholders have welcomed the governor’s continued focus on tourism, expressing optimism that the Shopping City will elevate the city’s profile, encourage private investments, and enhance quality of life in the capital and beyond.

The government has promised that the Shopping City project will be developed in phases with top-tier design standards and environmental sustainability practices. Groundbreaking is expected to take place before the end of the third quarter of 2025.

As Governor Umo Eno continues to roll out ambitious infrastructural projects, his administration is increasingly seen as setting a new benchmark for tourism-led urban development in Nigeria’s South-South region.
